About the Workshop

Sessions: Four sessions Wednesdays 5:30 to 7:30 - September 23, 30, October 7, 14

Prerequisite: Basic experience using Adobe Premiere or comparable experience (filmmaking, editing, digital storytelling)

Story is a vital element of human culture and society, and one of the most optimal methods of communication, entertainment, and education. If you would like to learn how to tell great stories, this class is for you. It is based on a combined approach, blending instruction with workshopping. In terms of instruction, you will learn the art and structure of great storytelling, how to develop concepts and create a deep narrative, and how to apply these concepts in the technical aspect of editing. On the workshopping side, students will present an idea for a project they are either currently working on or would like to work on. Not only will you receive feedback from your classmates and the instructor, but everyone in class will work together to make sure your story is told the best way. All experience levels are welcome!

Week 1: What is story and why is it important, freeing up one's creativity, introduction of workshopping students' ideas
Week 2: Structure of story, template vs freeform, storyboarding/scriptwriting, workshopping
Week 3: Applying concepts on editing software, refinement, workshopping
Week 4: Bringing it all together/Final Project

About the Instructor

Rory Liddy is an award-winning filmmaker, educator, and entrepreneur. He is a native of Cambridge, MA, though he has spent a little bit of time everywhere else as well. With a passion for all things media, he has created his own projects, as well as producing for other artists, TV stations, studios, etc. He single-handedly directed, shot, and edited his most recent documentary, Auraganic (2025), which was nominated for Best Documentary at 6 film festivals, and is currently in distribution with major streaming platforms. He loves to share his knowledge with others, and strongly believes that media literacy is one of the major keys to success in today’s world.
